Do you all know about Yubikiri in Japan?
Today I would like to talk about Yubikiri.
In Japan, it is a popular custom to pledge strict adherence to promises.
The two parties confirm their intentions by bending each other’s pinky fingers into a hook shape and hooking them together to recite a spell. The incantation is “Yubikir Genman Uso wo Tuitara Hari Senbon Nomasu Yubikitta,” which translates to “If you break your promise, I will punish you by making you drink a thousand needles, a thousand needles,” and after the incantation is finished, the two fingers are separated. The promise is now made.
Yubikiri is still practiced today as an oath to keep a promise.
Let’s keep our promises.
Why don’t you try using Yubikiri when you make a promise to someone you care about?
